Welcome to the Tiny Roots Project! We are Travis and Raelynn (and our 2 cats) and this site is our way of documenting and sharing our dream of becoming debt free and as food and energy efficient as possible. The way we are choosing to do so is by starting with a tiny house, then saving for some property on which to place our tiny house and start a permaculture farm. We have been kicking ideas around for the last 10 years but were traveling and figuring out how we fit in this world. We kept talking about an elusive “one day” when we would settle down somewhere. We kept refining our vision until just recently, when we both decided it was time to sit down and solidify a plan. We were finally ready to set down some roots.
Like many people who have similar dreams, we started researching all different types of natural building methods and scouting properties in different regions, but land prices anywhere near job opportunities seemed unrealistic and our dreams seemed to get further and further away.
Enter the tiny house concept. Tiny houses are dwellings, often on wheels, that are generally around 200 square feet or less. Think RV, but built using standard house construction materials. The key for our goals was the fact that they can be mobile, allowing us to build our house and then acquire the land. No more high rent costs would allow us to save faster for our land. They also encompass many permaculture principles, including reducing unnecessary resource use, reusing materials, designing with purpose, and having multiple uses for as many components as possible. The tiny house idea wasn’t actually an immediate hit with Raelynn; she blew off the idea with a laugh and a “yeah right, that’s way too small!” But the seed had been planted. One day the following month she hopped on the internet to look at that same tiny house Travis had shown her (click here to see it if you dare). Four hours later she was still looking at images and had begun scouring videos as well. The “tiny” seed had germinated and started to set down some roots; the Tiny Roots Project began.
The Tiny Roots Project will have two distinct phases: tiny house build and permaculture farm development. The focus will initially be on the house. We will be designing and building with permaculture principles in mind, however, the main blog posts will be focused on construction and materials. After we finish our house and acquire land, our focus will change to developing the land with permaculture principles and the blog will focus on our ideas and various projects.
Our goals for the house:
- Use reclaimed materials when possible
- Build it for $20,000 or less
- Focus on energy efficiency
- Components must have at least 2 purposes
- Complete build within a year of acquiring the trailer
Our goals for the land: these will come when we have some land.
Neither of us has any extensive building or permaculture experience, so we will be learning as we go. We figured we may as well share our experiences as we learn so others who are joining the tiny house or permaculture community can benefit from our research and avoid any mistakes we may make along the way. Thanks for following along and we hope you find our project interesting and helpful.
