First wall section up!
at this point while the wall is up did you screw them into the trailer or did you only use the bolts to secure the walls?
Thanks for the question Julio. We recently realized we forgot to include that information. We first screwed them into the trailer with structural screws every 16 inches or so. After all the walls were up and sheathing installed, we then bolted them down with 5/8 in bolts.
Thanks for the reply. Im putting my walls up soon on my tiny house.
Congratulations! Are you documenting your build as well? We love to see other builds.
Thank you! we are documenting with pictures and items we purchase. We will probably make a video at the end. Ill come back and share it when we are done.
Can you please tell me when you attached your walls to the trailer with the 5/8 bolts, 1, how long were they, 2 how many did you use and how far did you space them apart ?
Thanks for the questions.
1) Our bolts were 4 1/4 inch long. The bolts used with the tension ties I think are 4 1/2 or 5 inches, the closest we could find in the Simpson structural bolt selection at our HD.
2) We used 13 bolts altogether. The ones in all four corners were in conjunction with Simpson HTT5 tension ties, so 4 of those and 9 stand alone bolts (with washers). They are spaced roughly 6 ft apart as recommended in Dee Williams’ book Go House Go. We didn’t have an even number because our doorway is right where another bolt should go on the back side of the wheel well, but we couldn’t move the door any further back. Technically we should have 14 bolts altogether (5 on each side and 2 on both the front and back).
3) We used 2 1/2 inch structural screws prior to placing the bolts.
I’d just like to add that these bolt and screw lengths are specific to our trailer, which has an angle iron flange that the walls rest on. If you have a trailer with a tube frame, these lengths wouldn’t be long enough to extend through the metal and then far enough into the wood or through the wood in the case of the bolts.
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any further questions.
Also could you pleas tell me how long the structural screws were.
Can you also please tell me how long the 5/8th bolts were and how many you used and how far apart did you space them.
